After the film industry, Disney now wants to conquer the gaming market with the purchase of EA – Here you can find out everything there is to know about the current rumors.

Redwood City – Just this year, EA released Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, the second part of its successful predecessor. The collaboration between Disney and Electronic Arts has been going well for several years, mainly thanks to the Star Wars brand. The fact that rumors are now emerging that Disney wants to buy the video game company should come as little surprise. Buying up its opponents and thus securing its monopoly position has no longer been a secret strategy since the deal with 21st Century Fox. But now the media giant also wants to conquer the gaming market. Could buying EA be the first step for this?

Disney wants to buy EA – what are the rumors?

What is it about? According to the US news company Bloomberg, Disney wants to make another attempt to enter the gaming industry. The company wants to move away from distributing its licenses to many different video game companies and rather place the biggest brands, such as Star Wars and Marvel, in the hands of an experienced publisher. According to Bloomberg’s report, EA was highlighted as a name, but there still doesn’t seem to be any clear statements about a potential purchase.

Long-term partnership: In 2013, EA and Disney worked out a joint deal for rights to Star Wars games. Accordingly, Visceral Games, DICE and BioWare have been allowed to develop games in George Lucas’ universe and have them published by EA. The following games from this franchise were released over the years:

  • Star Wars: Battlefront (2015)
  • Star Wars Battlefront II (2017)
  • Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (2019)
  • Star Wars: Squadrons (2020)
  • Star Wars Jedi: Survivor (2023)

For example, Battlefront II flopped badly due to its terrible pay-to-win options, but the Jedi series still enjoys great popularity and perfectly fills the gap between the release dates of the many Star Wars series on Disney+. Various studios under EA are currently also working on Marvel games, thereby serving Disney’s other huge brand.

How likely is the deal between Disney and EA?

Difficult to assess: Although the long collaboration forms a good foundation for a purchase, Disney CEO Bob Iger still seems to view the whole project as “non-binding”. At the same time, EA is a big, established name in the gaming market, which also owns large game series, such as EA Sports FC and Battlefield, independently of Disney brands.

Don’t come out of nowhere: EA hasn’t seemed averse to being bought out in the past either. For example, last year there was a rumor circulating that Amazon wanted to buy the video game giant. EA’s debt situation plays a significant role in such considerations. According to statistics from June 2023, Electronic Arts has debts of 1.88 billion, so it seems logical to think about selling the company.

Either way, we just have to wait and see: Even if Disney were to think more intensively about buying EA, such negotiations could drag on for years. A recent example of this is Microsoft’s purchase of Activision Blizzard. A lawsuit stood in the way of this deal, which led to a long standstill in negotiations. With such large companies and this enormous amount of money, it has to be looked at closely from all sides, so it will be a while before EA becomes part of Disney.

It definitely remains exciting. But we can assume that Disney will get serious about the gaming market sooner or later. A current game that has Disney on it and in it is the free-to-play fun racer Disney Speedstorm, which you can also play on the PS5.
