GTA 5 from Rockstar Games manages to remain relevant even 10 years after its release. We’ll explain to you here exactly how it does this.

New York – Even a full decade after GTA 5, there is still no successor. Even though there are many leaks circulating online about GTA 6, Rockstar Games still does not want to announce a release date. We’ll summarize here why GTA 5 continues to enjoy high numbers of players despite the increasing hype surrounding the next part.

GTA 5 – Open-World Gameplay

Playful diversity: In the third-person perspective you move across the huge map of Los Santos. Whether you run, drive, fly or throw yourself onto the passing train is entirely up to you. As in every open world game, you can do whatever you want from the start. Even before you actually start the main missions, you can explore the entire map and get powerful weapons, cars or jets to make the individual missions easier. The only thing standing in your way is the law or your skill.

Setting and characters of GTA 5 at a glance

The Saints: In the mega-city, which looks incredibly similar to Los Angeles, you drive, fly and shoot your way through Rockstar’s interpretation of the Californian coastal city. The metropolis is filled with many colorful characters, gangs, the mafia, but also with an extensive nightlife. There is always something to do in the city.

Not for the first time in Los Santos

The city in the fictional state of San Andreas already appeared in the predecessor of the same name, GTA: San Andreas. Protagonist Carl “CJ” Johnson was born in a poor neighborhood in Los Santos and spent a significant part of his life there. GTA: San Andreas originally came out in 2004 for the Playstation 2, but then also found its way to the Xbox, PC, Mac and also Android devices, as well as the iPhone.

Unexpected protagonists: Such a crazy city naturally also needs similarly crazy characters to tell a wonderfully crazy story. The three playable protagonists couldn’t be more different and at the same time fit together so well.

Michael is a former criminal who faked his death in order to live a quiet but wealthy life with his family in the wealthy district of Los Santos. Franklin grew up in difficult circumstances and knows nothing other than his life as a car retriever for his criminal boss. He is the youngest of the three. Trevor is a very eccentric character who has fallen into a severe drug addiction. He doesn’t live in the city like the other two, but outside in a caravan, where he is constantly clashing with everyone and especially the law.

Brief overview of the story in GTA 5

Wahnwitziges Chaos: When Franklin is given the task of retrieving a luxury car from Michael’s son, the two team up unconventionally to both take down Franklin’s boss and take revenge on Michael’s wife’s lover. All of this leads to ever deeper conflicts with big names in Los Santos. When Trevor sees his comrade Michael, who he believed dead, on the news, he sets off for the city. The three of them lie, fight and shoot their way from one gang fight to the next and collect big money in many heists.

Ample scope: The fact that each character also has their own problems and dreams means there is always a lot of variety. The main story of GTA 5 consists of 69 missions, for which you can plan around 30 hours of playing time. You can also take care of 124 side missions and for everything together you can expect a playing time of 80 hours. But as is typical for GTA, you can also spend most of your playing time driving around the huge map, exploring the area and simply doing whatever comes to mind.

GTA 5 – Release on many platforms

Consistent re-release: Similar to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim from Bethesda, publishing GTA 5 on more and more platforms is also a profitable strategy. The game, published primarily for Playstation and Xbox, has not only made the multiple generational leap from PS3 to PS5 or from Xbox 360 to Xbox Series X over the years, but has also found its way to the PC in recent years.

Great success of the series: And with great success: Even in 2023, the title will continue to be among the top 10 most played games on Steam. But that will also have a lot to do with its successful predecessors, as well as its online mode, GTA Online. Grand Theft Auto came out (1997) for the PC, PS1 and Game Boy Color from Nintendo and since then there have been regular new entries in the successful game series. We have listed all the parts for you here:

  • Grand Theft Auto (1997)
  • GTA: London, 1969 (1999)
  • GTA: London, 1961 (1999)
  • GTA 2 (1999)
  • GTA 3 (2001)
  • GTA: Vice City (2002)
  • GTA Advance (2004)
  • GTA: San Andreas (2004)

  • GTA: Vice City Stories (2006)

GTA 5 and GTA Online – Practically two games in one

More chaos together: Not focusing on the story and simply causing unrest in the immediate area is the be-all and end-all of the GTA series. The freedom to let off steam in Rockstar’s destructive construction kit sets GTA apart from other genre representatives and guarantees a success formula that is difficult to imitate. But wouldn’t it be even more fun to turn Los Santos upside down with your friends? Rockstar Games thought so too and released GTA 5 together with its online multiplayer component GTA Online.

GTA Online is the free online mode of GTA 5, which is available in almost every version of the main game. So if you want to shoot your way through the city with your friends, you need at least a version of GTA 5. Only PS3 and Xbox 360 players can no longer access this feature, as online support there will already be discontinued at the end of 2021 became.

GTA Online als Live-Service-Game

Constantly new content: Through regular content updates and various events, GTA Online manages to keep its players happy. For example, the GTA Online San Andreas Mercenaries event, which came out in mid-2023, offers some new procurement and sales missions, new vehicles, weapons and countless improvements that the community has requested.

Get big money faster: Of course, the integration of microtransactions cannot be missing in a live service game like this. For example, players can buy Shark Cards that contain different amounts of GTA dollars. Regular discounts on weapons, vehicles and real estate encourage players to make purchasing decisions. If you have a lot of time, you can of course earn these sums of money. Here too, everyone is free to decide how they want to spend time in Los Santos, whether with real money or without.
