The plot of the new game takes place 9 months after the events of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, with both Spider-Men living the peak of their hero lives, but with problems in their personal lives. Peter is in debt and about to lose his Aunt May’s house, while Miles is procrastinating on his college dissertation.
Things get worse when New York City is attacked by Kraven the Hunter, a super villain who is looking for specimens worthy of being adversaries for him and his hunters. During the adventure they will also encounter other villains such as the Lizard, Sandman, Mister Negative, who was one of the main enemies in the first game and has a history with Miles, among others.
Parallel to this story, Peter Parker encounters an alien life form, a symbiote, which grants him a powerful black uniform, but which gradually affects his personality and makes him increasingly violent. At some point in history, this symbiote will separate from Spider-Man and find a new host to become the well-known super villain Venom. However, developers at Insomniac Games have already confirmed that the person beneath the symbiote will not be the well-known Eddie Brock, leaving the enemy’s identity unknown.
Some of the main new features in the gameplay include the presence of a much larger map of New York, with the inclusion of areas such as Brooklyn and Queens, including Coney Island, to explore. There is also the possibility of switching between the two Spider-Men at any time during the game, switching almost immediately between heroes with specific stories and missions for each. Another big new feature are the “Web Wings”, wings that work like wingsuits so that Peter and Miles can glide in addition to swinging with their webs.
Gameplay includes open-world exploration, action-packed combat and stealth sections. In the action parts, each Spider-Man has their own peculiarities, such as mechanical arms and symbiote powers for Peter Parker and the bioelectric powers of Miles Morales. They will also have Spider-Devices at their disposal, devices that can be used to assist in combat. By winning their battles, characters gain experience points that can then be used to unlock more skills.
