Farm Reauthorization Briefing Deflates with Speaker Vacuum


The ouster of Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) as House speaker has left Congress in disarray and led to serious worries over how the farm bill can progress when there’s such a big power vacuum on one side of the Capitol.

After Congress last weekend avoided a government shutdown, there was little time—only days really—for optimism about how must-pass bills may move forward.

Members of the Senate’s agriculture committee concede there hasn’t been a lot of significant progress on reauthorizing the 2018 farm bill, though the short-term funding extension both chambers passed last weekend included an extension into mid-November for USDA programs …
