Three years after the launch of the PlayStation 5, Sony Interactive is launching a revised PS5 console this year.

There had been speculation online for months about a revised PlayStation 5 – as of this evening German time it is clear: the rumors have mostly proven to be valid, even though the term ‘PS5 Slim’ is not used.

Specifically, Sony Interactive will be launching a new PS5 generation from November, which will gradually replace the models currently on sale. The current generation stocks are still being sold off (currently as a bundle for under €500), after which only the ‘new’ PS5 will be marketed. The market launch of the revised PS5 console will start in November in the USA – other markets will follow thereafter.

Main difference to previous series: In the future it will just be running one Version from tape, namely either with or without Blu-Ray drive. If you initially opt for the cheaper PS5 Digital Edition, you can upgrade the drive at any time later for €119.99. The trick: There is a cover on the side of the device that can be removed with one hand.

The dimensions of the PlayStation 5 will be more compact in the future – this will reduce both the volume (minus 30%) and the weight (minus 18 or 24%). The Sony engineers were also able to optimize other technical specifications: The console is still delivered with an SSD hard drive ex works – instead of the previously usual 825 GB, there is now 1 TB of memory available.

There will be no change to the existing recommended retail price: The console with drive costs €549.99 – the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition is €449.99. As before, the scope of delivery includes a DualSense controller and a horizontal stand. If you want to place the console upright on the shelf, you need a vertical stand, which is available for a cool €29.99 and is compatible with all PS5 series.
