The Russian national team coach criticizes FIFA: “What’s in store when the war concludes tomorrow?”

Russia was marginalized in the world of football after war broke out in Ukraine. Valeriy Karpin, who is the coach of the country’s national football team, claims that the radical attitude of FIFA and UEFA is harmful to Russian football.

The last competitive match was played by the Russian national team in November 2021. Then it faced Croatia in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.

When the country committed armed aggression against Ukraine, the team was excluded from all tournaments organized by FIFA and UEFA. The Russians missed the World Cup and will not take part in Euro 2024. Nothing indicates that their situation will change soon.

During this time, Russia played mainly friendly matches against lower-class opponents who agreed to organize sparring matches. This year, Walerij Karpin’s players faced, among others: with Qatar, Iran and Iraq.

According to the coach, the current situation, which prevents the team from competing at an international level, is detrimental to Russian football, significantly hampering football development in the country.

– Since the reason for our isolation is the war, when it ends, we should return to the game. What will happen when there is peace in Ukraine tomorrow? – Karpin replied sharply when asked when Russia could return to playing in major tournaments.

On Thursday, October 12, the Russians will play a friendly against Cameroon, and four days later they will face Kenya.
