There is more suspense in knowing who will be German champion or who will advance to the group stage of the Rugby World Cup than in knowing the names of the next organizing countries of major international football tournaments. No more last-minute negotiations, arrangements in the corridors and surprise envelopes that the president opens with a trembling hand. From now on, all candidates are accepted, provided they complete the process and form an alliance.
The European Football Union (UEFA) on Tuesday awarded the organization of the final phase of the 2028 European Nations Championship (Euro) to the joint candidacy of the United Kingdom and Ireland. The five associations of the British Isles were the only candidates after the withdrawal of Turkey, which obtained the organization of the next Euro, in 2032, jointly with Italy. The two countries were initially rivals before joining forces and merging their candidacy on July 28. The application from Russia, which applied for one or the other of the two editions, was not deemed admissible by UEFA.
