Die san die instead of Mia san Mia: Out of consideration for sponsor Konami, FC Bayern Munich’s premiere in the Virtual Bundesliga 2023/24 is not at all Bayern-like.
Update from October 2, 2023: In response to a request from GamesWirtschaft, FC Bayern Munich confirmed that the selection process for the club’s own Virtual Bundesliga team has now been completed – it will soon be announced which amateur players will be in the race for the record champions from November.
For the first time and out of necessity, Bayern are taking part in the official e-sports competition of the German Football League (DFL). Unlike RB Leipzig or Borussia Dortmund, Bayern are keeping the topic on a very low note, as the Virtual Bundesliga will be taking place starting this season EA Sports FC 24 practiced – i.e. the direct competing product eFootball 2024 from FCB sponsor Konami.
This starting point also provides an explanation why the Virtual Bundesliga on the FC Bayern website doesn’t even take place.
In general, interest in the competition and the VBL championship trophy could hardly be lower: “Our ambition is to send a powerful fan team with surprise potential into the race, so we don’t have any precise goals regarding placement at the end of the season.”
After all: the VBL games are scheduled to take place from November FC Bayern eSports Twitch channel (approx. 24,000 followers) will be broadcast live.
Report from August 2, 2023: The constellation is spicy: It was only in June 2022 that the Japanese game manufacturer Konami Digital Entertainment announced the platinum partnership with FC Bayern Munich „official videogame partner“ extended. Duration: unknown. Part of the deal: The developers of the Konami soccer game eFootball are allowed to access the squad and integrate the stars realistically into the PC, console and mobile game – “as the only video game provider in the world.”
The club’s platinum partners also include brands such as HypoVereinsbank, SAP and Paulaner, some of which have been working with FC Bayern for decades. Marketing Director Andreas Jung spoke of a partnership for good reasons “of great importance”.
Almost parallel to the Konami contract extension, the German Football League (DFL) declared the Virtual Bundesliga (VBL) as an official competition – and thereby ordered all Bundesliga clubs to compete with their own e-sports team from the 2023/24 season. As a result, the previous ‘abstainers’ Borussia Dortmund, SC Freiburg and FC Bayern also have to build their own VBL team.
The hook: So far, the Virtual Bundesliga has only been used FIFA practiced by Konami competitor Electronic Arts – from this autumn the competition will be based on EA Sports FC 24. FC Bayern Munich’s participation in the Virtual Bundesliga upgrades the direct competing product into its own platinum partner – which would be like Kimmich, Musiala and Gnabry working for BMW, Puma and Vodafone instead of Audi, Adidas and Telekom advertise.
This mixed situation explains why FC Bayern is planning the Virtual Bundesliga at the same levelthat’s not the case at all My san mia-Conforms to the self-image of the record champions. Because from today’s Wednesday (August 2nd) there will be a specially set up website outside the official club appearance wanted for VBL playerswho compete as part of a three-person e-sports team in the red and white jersey: Five qualifying tournaments will take place up to and including August 13th – the eight finalists will play against each other on August 19th.
Gamepad skills are just one of many factors. Further requirements: identification with the club and its values, a minimum age of 18 years, main residence in Germany, Austria or Switzerland and “time flexibility” between November 2023 and April 2024, i.e. during the matches of the Virtual Bundesliga Club Championship. Media appearance also plays a role in the evaluation.
That the selection based on FIFA 23 takes place and the future FC Bayern esports athletes will be able to access the PlayStation 5 version from September EA Sports FC 24 retrain, will in the tender not mentioned with a syllable. This not entirely insignificant note merely appears im FAQ on. The competition was also not advertised via press release or social media – one reason why hundreds of places in the qualifying tournaments are currently unfilled.
Bayern obviously don’t have any great ambitions: Because the e-sports trio only receives an employment contract for 8 hours per week – which will hardly be enough for professional training at a competitive level. Besides, there is one “appropriate financial compensation” intended. And: The candidates must be willing and able to travel regularly to the FC Bayern Munich office on Säbener Straße in Munich – because that is where the majority of the virtual Bundesliga games are played.
Like FC Bayern Munich now responds to media inquiries confirmed has, the Allianz Arena is not in view of the Konami cooperation EA Sports FC 24 contain.
