XR smart glasses “Viture One” are perfect for mobile games, but there is still room for improvement in wearing comfort: Product review | WIRED.jp Latest

Wouldn’t you like a portable “virtual 120-inch screen” on which you can play games and watch movies? That is the selling point of the XR smart glasses “Viture One.”

Viture One connects directly to your smartphone, laptop, Nintendo Switch, etc. and can be used like a USB Type-C compatible monitor. A neckband computer is also available as an option. The neckband is equipped with Android and can be used for cloud gaming, remote play of game consoles, and movie streaming on Netflix.

Viture One first gained attention when it raised more than $3 million on the crowdfunding site Kickstarter. This amount will greatly expand the campaign for the VR headset “Oculus Rift”.exceedIt was something. Now, one year later, mixed reality (MR) smart glasses are being delivered to supporters.

This time, I got the “Viture One Ultimate Pack”, which includes several accessories such as a neckband and mobile dock, to try out the product. It’s the best cross-reality (XR) device I’ve tried so far, but it’s still in its infancy and there’s a lot of room for improvement.

Entertainment products specializing in games

Some of you may be wondering what exactly “XR” means. XR is a general term for technologies such as virtual reality (XR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR). Although virtual reality (VR) is not yet widely accepted by the public, it has established itself as a niche field.

However, recently, the presence of MR and AR has surpassed that of VR. Apple’s Vision Pro is refocusing attention on an area where predecessors like Google’s Glass and Microsoft’s Hololens had limited success.

“Viture One and VR headsets have some things in common, but Viture One doesn’t support VR gaming. Viture One also lets you see the world around you. It’s relatively compact and sophisticated. It weighs only 78g and works by projecting images onto a translucent screen that overlays the real world.

Technically, it’s in the same family as a number of recent devices, including the Nreal Air (now renamed XREAL), the Lenovo Glasses T1, and the Spacetop AR laptop I recently tried. Viture One is primarily a gaming-focused entertainment product, rather than augmented reality that overlays images that match the real world or offers features that help improve productivity.

Four years after the introduction of the bulky Vuzix Blade, XR smart glasses have improved. At first glance, the Viture One can be mistaken for regular sunglasses, being slightly lighter and slimmer than the Xreal Air. However, the moment you put these on, the feeling that these are regular glasses will disappear.

Difficulty finding a position where the screen looks good

My first impressions of Viture One were complaints about the fit. It was difficult to find a suitable viewing position for the small screen projected in front of me, and it wasn’t easy to focus. The small OLED panel behind the lens requires some distance to comfortably view, and many users end up trying to use the Viture One a little further away from their eyes. As a result, they are placed on the tip of the nose more than regular glasses, which makes them look a little ungainly.
